Don,

It has been interesting reading about the problems at the front of your P-type
chassis.

I became involved with MMM cars in 1960 & have had the usual wonderful
experiences and some disasters. The memories are overwhelmingly superb.
These are wonderful little cars.

Many of you would know that right now I am building a single seater race car
on a P-type chassis with some changes that will make the car more fun for me
to drive. You know, like using these wonderful modern oils that increase the
bhp so very much. However I am retaining the "period character of the car"
right down to using the original 1935 air from tyres I purchased way, way
before I bought my K3.

When it came time to set up the front springs recently on this car, I was
puzzled that something didn't sit correctly. Eventually the old brain clicked
into gear and recalled what I was INSTRUCTED to do in 1960 (and this was
reinforced by Geoff Coles in 1964). That is check everything, and then check
it again.

Would you believe that both of front springs were different lengths. As luck
would have it the length difference is from the front to the centre of the
axle mounting point. A testing error to correct.

Anyhow, there is a message there, that I pass on to all and I hope it helps.

Regards

Pip

Thanks to everyone who took a shot at helping me figure this thing out!

The pin checked out as well as the spring dimensions ... it was the hole!

In a long phone call with Lew I believe we have determined that in
straightening the cross tube (previous owner obviously made some serious
contact) it appears the threaded "plug" containing both the threads and the
"lugs" or positioning pins has been pushed down into the tube so as to not
allow the threads on the pin to engage. I believe I compounded the problem
when I had the frame and cross tube powder coated, the combined added
thickness also is preventing a snug fit between the inside if the dumb iron
knuckle and the end of the cross tube. Both issues should be very fixable!

Thanks again to everyone for all the good advice.
