This is your faithful servant with another stumper:
The J2 Im working was never intended to have any engine work done on
it, but so much for best intentions. When the car is started, it runs a
bit rough without the choke pulled on (of course). But as it warms up,
the carbs (mostly the rear one, but also the front to a lesser degree)
regularly spits fuel. Mostly a fine mist, but clearly more than it
should. Compression is between 85 95 lbs. Valve clearance is as close
as I can get it to the recommended .006. Carbs were rebuilt by one of
the best in the business (Jim Taylor of Oklahoma), and the float level
is set so that the fuel level is about 1/8 below the level of the jets
(about = as measured at the float levers.
The engine runs OK when it is not spitting, but starts missing when the
spitting starts. Spark appears strong, ignition is set so that points
are just opening when at TDC on #1, advance appears about 20 degrees on
the flywheel.
Anyone have any ideas what is going on?
