Terry,
Attached is a photo of the pipes I dug out of the Airline this morning.
Once I removed much of the old dirt and grease, it's pretty clear that
there is a silvery plating on the pipes. It would appear to be a fairly
thin coating. I now believe it isn't terneplate, but could well, as Tom
contends, that it is a flash coat of chrome. It isn't particularly
shiny, but after 65 years, I guess that is to be expected. Also, it's
unlikely that these were polished, so a somewhat dull finish might be
expected.
For certain the pipes are not brass. The ends under the nuts are a very
bright copper color. The nuts, of course are brass, but they too have
been plated.
I hope this helps to resolve this question.
Regards,
Lew

Now on the plating... we (plater and me) feel strongly that it was
flash
chrome directly on polished brass. No nickel, which is why it does not

This is what I have seen Tom......plating on the pipes from the union
under
the car at the side rail up to the petrol reserve switch, including the
nuts.
Now you bring up an interesting point, were those pipes (from union to
reserve switch) brass instead of copper like the lines from the tank to
the
unions?
