[Pip sent this, but it bounced because of the attachment.]
Just a reminder that the team.net lists do not allow attachments - this
helps folks with small mailboxes, and also serves to prevent spread of
viruses via e-Mail. Anyone who has a picture to share is encouraged to:
-Post it on a web page, and tell us where it is.
-Send in individual e-mail
-post it on the team.net ftp server, open to all, and just tell folks it's
there. The prewar folder would be best for MMM stuff. FTP to:

I sent a message earlier today but no "copy" came through to me so I will
try again.

I seek help from all on the MMM List in confirming details to enable me to
go racing in my P-type.
I need some information about evidence of 16" wheels being used on Pre War
MG's and the events which EX127 & EX154 competed in and I wonder if anyone
can assist by forward it on to me.
The story behind this need for detail is as follows.
I am trying to obtain a "log Book" from our Motor Sports body for my
P-type. The log book is necessary to
allow me to race the car. I need to achieve this reasonably soon as I
fear I do not have many more years that I will be capable of enjoying
"racing a pre war MG"
This car is quite different from a normal P-type and in fact is very
similar to the car Bobby Kohlrausch had which was
known as EX154. My P-type has 16" wheels & is supercharged. Under the
regulations for our Aust motor Sport body, there are 3 sections for cars
built between 1931 & 1949.
These are :-
1) Cars built in the period with a racing history. EX154 would fall into
this section.
2) Sports cars that do not have a racing history but are of a type that app
eared in competition prior to the end of 1940.
3) One off specials built using major components manufactured prior to
the end of 1945.
It is the second category that I am trying to have my P-type log booked
as. The reason being that it is so close to
EX154 specification that it has all the requirements and we cannot prove
any competition history for my P-type. It
really should be very simple. But it is proving very complex.
The Australian Motor Sports body claims that MG did not use 16" wheels
before the war and will not issue a log book without evidence. I cannot
fit larger wheels as the would hit the torque reaction cables. So I
especially seek
information on this issue and hope you can assist. If you can answer the
following questions I would be extremely grateful.
Does anyone have any evidence of the following points :-
1) Does anyone know of any MG running pre war with square edge rim
wire wheels (clearly visible in the photo attached as against round edge
rims as fitted to TA, TC etc) that were 18" or 19".
What I am trying to say is that the picture attached shows a wheel with
square edge rims similar to wheels used on
TF etc. But the wheel in the photo is on is on EX 154. It obviously has
a large section tyre on the wheel. My belief
is that if it was an 18" or 19" large section tyre, it would then protrude
beyond the perimeter of the fuel tank. The one
in the photo obviously does not do this.
I have never seen a photo on an MG (pre war) with 18" or 19" square edge
rims. If there are none, it strengthens the argument that this wheel on
EX154 in the photo is 16".
2) Does anyone have any evidence of pre war MG's using 16" wheels
prior to 1940.
3) Do you feel that the Kohlrausch car (EX154) had 16" wheels at
least for some occasions.
4) Mike Allison mentions in his article in 1997 MMM Year Book, that
engine 2471AP/R12 was supplied for
EX154 with a Pre selector box, supercharger etc. Taking into consideration
the "considerable expense" of
re developing EX154 after the end of the 1936 season to compete in larger
classes for sports cars, it would not
seem logical to supply another pre selector gearbox if one already was
fitted to the car. There are a couple of other indications that I have
that suggest that when EX154 was first built, contrary to what is in the
specifications, that it
may not have had a pre selector box at least till the later engine was
produced. Do anyone have any evidence one way
or the other that EX154 was ever fitted with a crash gearbox
5) Does anyone know when & where the photo on page 48 of 1997 MMM
Year Book was taken.
6) Does anyone know where & when the photo on page 54 of 1997 MMM
Year Book was taken
7) I also seek a full list of events that EX127 & EX154 competed in
along with the results and any photographs supporting these records.
If anyone has any supporting photographs and were prepared to get good
quality laser copies or Photographic copies,
I would be very pleased to pay for them & what ever air postage may be
involved. Could you write the details
on the back of the photos.
Just a little more on the wheels.
The car specs for EX154, say wheels & tyres supplied by Kohlrausch. Why ?
I assume that early in 1935, when the car was delivered, MG could not
supply 16" rims. Possibly he could have used wheels from the BMW (German
built Austin) he used to drive.
I understand Kohlrausch was a close friend of C.Kimber and that Kimber
visited Kohlrausch in Germany about the time EX154 was ordered. Could the
wheels have been a spare set from the Corsica car Kimber used. I believe
it had 16" wheels. Do you know when this visit was.
Finally, I know MG used stainless steel spokes on racing MG's in 30's, but
when did they stop. I have never heard of them on TA trials cars or later
MG's.
Sorry to be a nuisance but there are really no pre war MG's racing in
Australia & I would like to "fly the flag" for a
few years before I am too old to do that.
Hope some can help out
