RE. A Proposal to conduct Land Speed Racing at WSMR
Land Speed racing is straight line racing for maximum speed. Only one car
runs at a time against the clock trying to exceed existing records in their
class. Typically the race course is from one to eleven miles long and eighty
to
two hundred feet wide. Race cars are anything from street cars with the
necessary roll cages and safety equipment all the way up to special purpose
built
streamliners. All race vehicles must pass a very strict inspection for safe
construction and required safety equipment.
Land Speed racing started in the late 40's. When our valiant, dedicated
troops were returning from the battle fields of WWII, the boys needed a place
to
burn off some steam in their cars. An organization was formed in 1949 named
the Southern California Timing Association, or SCTA.

They chose the safety of the dry lakes of southern California as opposed to
the city streets. This racing has continued at El Mirage in CA, and the
Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Racing was also conducted at Muroc CA. on the
Edwards Air Force Base. Also spin-off organizations have popped up in Maxton
NC,

conducted at Air Fields. They even conduct open road land speed racing on
public
highways in Nebraska, Texas and Nevada.
