Some years ago I attended the Human Powered Speed Championships. This
was the year the Brits fielded an attempt powered by Jason Quelley (?
The time-trials specialist that beat Lance Armstrong in the initial time
trial in the Tour de France).
As I remember, the "bike" was beautiful, the team large and well funded,
well publicized and about 15 mph short of Sam Whittingham's HUGE 80MPH
and change effort. (Think about this. Flat highway, no wind, bicycle
and a silent 80 mph!)
The brit bike had almost twice the frontal area of the bike George
[2]built (for under $1000 bucks out of junkyard [1] parts.) and most saw
this before initial runs. (The effort rented the local airport for
shakedowns!)
Personally, I love to see anyone apply themselves to a challenge and
succeed. When the underdog (backyard hot rodder?) its even better.
Best of luck to all! (the JCB probably has some untapped potential?)
(Ah, dueling 'liners, what a concept!)
