The Stanley family was very involved in the early days of Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. Their touring cars were the only ones that would make it easily to the 12,000 foot high summit. Estes Park still has a lot of Stanley comments in their brochures. As long as you can get a fire hot enough to create steam you have the incredible power of steam to move whatever the engine is connected to. Torque, not RPM's. Could make for some interesting gearing/tire size combinations on a land speed attempt vehicle.
