Can an engine that was originally manufactured with babbit bearings be line
bored or something to convert it to inserts?

Hi DickJ
Sure. The rods have to be notched for the bearing insert keeper. Then you
must find a bearing shell that fits the rod. Check with Egge Machine. They may
already stock just what you need. If not they can make anything you need. You
may find an existing bearing shell that may only need narrowing or one that
fits perfect as is. You would want to align bore the engine anyway if it's
that old. They can machine the block crank journals oversize to fit your new
bearing inserts. You should have the rods rebuilt and resized also and they
could fine tune the fit on the shells when they do that. The crank rod and
main
journals can be cut to fit the bearing shells also. Even if the bearing is
larger than the crank journals, they can build up the journals with weld and
recut them to size.
