Tom,
Regarding lubricant.......any reputable gear oil (fossil or synthetic) and
Pro-blend's PN 8398 Pro Tuff gear lube applied per instructions will lower
heat levels and make the gears live longer. My gear teeth look a lot
smoother  than when I put them in the carrier.
