An option if you have the computing power - and the raw data needed by the
program - is to use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) on the whole
vehicle. The fastest car in the world was designed by the use of CFD,
model free-running trials (well with rocket sled assistance!) and fixed
floor and moving ground plane model wind tunnel testing. A smaller vehicle
could add in full scale tunnel testing, as we used on the GM3 motorcyle.
Ofcourse with most of these the output results need a skilled aero expert
to tell you what is happening.
So, a number of options before getting up to substantial speed on the salt
and finding lift when you really need downforce.
