Don't confuse sour grapes with friction. What ThrustSSC achieved is nothing
short of astounding and worthy of great respect and recognition for all
involved.
If Breedlove would have attended to business instead of whatever it was he
was doing on the dirt, then the USA would have doubtless held the world
record -- albeit for a short time -- the point is the Brits would have
landed in the USA chasing the glory, not still owning the glory. Faced with
that, who knows what that would have altered in the psyche of the players?
Remember the mark was only 633 and SOA was more than capable of obliterating
that number -- especially when you consider it fell over at 675. It could be
viewed as the missed opportunity of the highest order.
Rather than the absolute record Breedlove will forever be remembered as the
guy who laid down the world's longest skid mark and made the fastest U-turn.
Sigh . . . the car was so right, so capable, yet so poorly campaigned.
Overall, the power plant is tertiary to my fascination, with speed be
primary and witnessing human courage as secondary. Wrap it all in ingenuity
required to get the numbers and stay safe and what a drama you've got.
