The term Estate car was used to designate a car used on an estate, for
transporting passengers, goods and things that would not fit into the saloon
car.
This brings up another term, for the English elite - the Shooting Brake this
was a very large Estate car with a fully fitted rear cargo area, complete with
picnic basket holders, bottle holders, basket tie downs and other essentials.
These were primarily used for the country outings on large estates expressly
for the purpose of the 'break' between shooting sessions, where the country
squire would entertain his shooting partners with an informal 'picnic' -
(defined as drinking binge!)
Ah, the English aristocracy - so colorful in what they bring to the English
language
