John.... the Long e-mail god was with us on this one... thank you for taking
the time to write it...
Let me see if I got some of what you said...
When I look at a cylinder wall after honing I can see Scratch marks, which
represent Peaks and valleys of metal. The Ring hangs out on the peaks and
the Oil hangs out in the Valley's... The Course stones cut the valleys and
the finer stones knock down the peaks to provide a greater flat surface area
for the rings to seal on.
The excess metal problem you mentioned is when the finer stones knock down
the peaks they kinda lay them over in the valley... kinda reminds me of the
Eye on the pyrimid... being tipped off the top and layed over on the side..
so the plateau looks twice as wide but the little tip of the peak is hanging
out on the side of the thing just waiting to fall off and foul my engine
oil... This is where the last stage of cylinder preperation is so
critical... it's where we get the ability to create a Race ready, broken in
engine... by doing some soft honing? and to do that we should use?
Thanks again John.... I'm sure everyone appreciates the opportunity to learn
a bit about this....
