With data gleaned from this list over the last few posts -
I'll take an initial stab at the number of Motorcycle Classes.
(Based on data from www.scta-bni.org/mcycle_classes.htm)
(Adjustments from the new 2002 rule book applied at bottom)
13 Displacement Classes under 2000cc
1 Displacement Class at 2001-3000cc (or is it 2000+ to 3000cc ?)
1 Displacement Class at 3001+cc
8 basic Frame Classes (P, M, A, MPS, APS, SC, SCS, and S)
18 Engine Classes (P, PP, PS, G, PG, VG, UG, BG, PBG, VBG F, PF,
VF, UF BF, PBF, VBF and Omega) but P, PP, and PS are for Frame
Class P only, and then there's Omega, so 3 Production Engine Classes
14 other Engine Classes, and Omega (Steam, Turbine or Electric)
(You may want to skip to the bottom here.)
Starting with Production.
Production Frame (P) allows only P, PP, and PS Engine classes to
2000cc or 13 Displacement Classes 3 x 13 = 39 (assumes a
production bike actually exists in each displacement and engine class)
Next Modified.
Modified Frame (M) allows 14 Engine Classes and 13 Displacement
Classes (up to 2000cc)
14 x 13 = 182 (We'll assume you can find a Vintage Blown
Gasoline bike to modify, etc.)
Special Construction
Class A is Modified Frame Bikes with extra long wheelbases, and
you get the two additional Displacement Classes, 3000 and 3001+
14 x 15 = 210
Modified Partial Streamlining
MPS is like class M. 14 Engine Classes and 13 Displacement Classes
14 x 13 = 182
Special Construction Partial Streamlining (APS), Sidecar (SC),
Sidecar Streamliner(SCS), and Streamliner (S), 4 Frame Classes,
all are allowed 14 Engine Classes and 15 Displacement Classes
4 x 14 x 15 = 840
Subtotal = 1453
(Easy part over - you probably 'really' want to skip to the
bottom here - but this next bit was fun)
Rules say: "Motorcycle classes are listed in order of
displacement, frame type, and engine type."
Now we come to good old Omega Engine Classes.
Piston Steam will have a displacement.
Gas Turbine and Steam Turbine may have a displacement equivalency
formula. I don't know how you would determine Electric
displacement, but electric cycles may run based on weight,
like the cars? I did not find anything in my old rule book (I'm
not saying it's not there, I just didn't find it).
Going through the Frame Classes.
We've all seen those little electric scooters, so there 'could'
be at least one P-Omega Class [Electric]. (Do any of these
meet the 'standard road motorcycle' requirement?) If the above
exists, I suppose someone will want to Modify it (Frame Class M),
and extend the wheelbase (Frame Class A), but to make a long
story short the 7 Frame Classes besides P might be possible.
8 Possible classes assuming all Electrics run in Omega regardless
of weight.
Since I don't know of any Production Steam or Turbine Motorcycles
(that meet the 500 minimum production quantity rule), I'll
eliminate this part of P-Omega. (But hey, wasn't there a
rotary engine motorcycle??) I know of no 'other thermodynamic
cycle' motorcycles.
However, one could fit a Steam Engine or Turbine to any of the
7 other Frame Classes so,
7 possible classes - but already included as XXX-Omega
above ASSUMING that Piston Steam engines don't have displacement
divisions. Otherwise,
add 105 Displacement-Frame-Omega classes for various displacement
Piston Steam engines in various Frame Classes. (But no clue
on how you would have some Omega's with displacement and others
without.)
So, vaguely possible additional 113 classes, more likely
7 or 8 additional Frame-Omega classes.
Sub Totals (still to be adjusted for 2002 rules)
1453 + 7 = 1,460 (most likely)
1453 + 8 = 1,461 (somewhat likely)
1453 + 113 = 1,566 (somewhat unlikely)
A new (to me) Engine Class, PV, Production Vintage. Can only
run in Frame Class P, up to 2000cc, so 13 Engine Classes
+ 13 new Classes!
Engine Class Omega removed from Frame Classes M, MPS, A, and APS
- 4 Classes
Frame Class Side Car, SC, no engines from P, PS, PP, PV, or Omega
- 5 Classes (You can't run a Production Side Car anymore?)
Also, (Rule 7.J.12) Engine Classes UG and UF are only allowed
in Streamliner. So,
- 26 for Modified Frame Class, M (13 each UG and UF under 2000cc)
- 30 for Special Construction, A (15 each UG and UF)
- 26 for Modified Partial Streamlining, MPS
- 30 for Special Construction Partial Streamlining, APS
- 30 for Sidecar, SC
- 30 for Sidecar Streamliner, SCS
Rule 7.J.13 seems to clarify that Omega all run in one class, under
'applicacable frame class requirements'. Since all Production Frames
run in 'gas class' (Rule 7.J.1) this probably kills the electric
motorcycle idea. Taking out the Frames where Omega is not
allowed leaves only two places, Streamliner and Side Car Streamliner,
for all Omega power plants. We also get to eliminate any possible
steam displacement classes.
+ 2 Omega classes.
Recalculating,
1,287 (1453+13-4-5-26-30-26-30-30-30+2) (1453 was total minus Omega)
A listing I have shows records in 302 different motorcycle classes,
which would make there appear to be a lot of room for entry.
Hey! I'm new at this and would REALLY appreciate any knowledge
gaps being filled in. Somewhere in here is also where I am
planning on competing. If some combinations are not allowed,
I would like to know. And, of course, any information (or guesses)
on Omega would be welcome! (and someone should check my math)
Thanks,
Jim.
