Scott,
It has been my experience that a motor that is on the lean side already
will self-destruct when the nitrous is applied. I, too experienced a
melt down similar to yours. I also like to run a little high on the fuel
pump pressure for insurance. Of course the ignition retard ( approx. 2
degrees for each 50 HP) is a must. I feel that if the A/F mixture is
right when you hit the nitrous, all will be well. At least that has been
my experience.
