I didn't know that. I was always under the assumption that on the Long
Course if any one of the mile speeds exceeded the existing record you were
qualified to run the second leg of the record attempt.........Doug King

You are correct Doug,
My reference was to if you have two miles over the record say 4 & 5 with 5 the
fastest. You then make the second run completing 4 but breaking and slowing in
5 you must average 4 with 4 to see if you have an average over the existing
record.
