Subject: RE: Cylinder Volumes
PV = nRT , Boyles Gas law I believe
1-initial
2-final
P-pressure
V-volume
n number of molecules (This will remain constant for a closed system)
T - temperature absolute (If using degrees Fahrenheit add 460)
R - I believe this is a gas constant and I don't have any text books handy
to look it up. Sorry.
For a closed system:
[P(1) x V(1)] / T(1) = [P(2) x V(2)] / T(2)
If the initial and final temperature is assumed to be the same (after
temperatures have reached equilibrium) then it can be dropped from the
above equation to read:
P(1) x V(1) = P(2) x V(2)
So:
900 psi x 1 cubic foot = 150 psi x X cubic foot
900psi
----------- = X, X =6
150 psi
So for a closed system after temperatures have reached equilibrium the
initial 1 cubic foot at 900 psi will fill a 6 cubic foot container at 150
psi.
Mayf, how did I do? Please correct if you see any mistakes.
