I got started earlier than most and haven't stopped yet.
In 2001 the community of dry lakes racers humbled me by electing me to the
Dry Lakes Racing Hall of Fame in honor of my work presented in the book,
Bonneville Salt Flats. The ceremony took place at Jack Mendenhall's Museum
of Gasoline Pumps during the Gold Coast Roadster and Racing Club's annual
"Gas Up" party. I was one of many so inducted that day, but no doubt the one
with the least amount of time spent in the sport.
Theirs was an appreciation that can only be earnestly earned. It also
validated my hopes that the book paid proper homage to land speed racing.
That is why I must conclude that those would accuse, intimate, or spread
vile gossip that I would like to "rape" the sport have either never read the
book, or are merely jealous.
Each time you tried to talk with me, I took note of the effort, but was
insanely bust during Speedweek. I can't attend the Salt Talks because they
are scheduled in conflict with my book signings each night in the lobby of
the State Line Hotel and Casino. While most of the racers have their copies,
there are 100's of new faces, fans, who arrive for the first time and want
to go away with more than a sunburn. I spend a lot of time with these
people, they may never be able to come back, but they leave with a
tremendous memory.
Here's something everyone can count on from me: It is my expressed desire to
expose the sport of land speed racing to as many people as possible in as
many countries as in as many languages as I am able. I firmly believe that
attending a land speed event on the salt is something every American should
do at least ONCE in their lives. IT is a great slice of American Spirit and
while it takes a special kind a cat to keep coming back, year after year, it
is a bright spark of who we are -- it reeks of determination and
perseverance that makes liberty glow -- 9/11/01 notwithstanding.
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is planning another tour to the
salt but it is undecided which event we will attend. I am working on another
dazzling presentation for this year at the State Line, but GLynne Bowsher's
technical report on how he built the world's fastest car is a damn big hill
to top. Worse, I did it to myself.
Also important is my publicity work with TEAMVesco and our hunt for a couple
of 5 bills time slips -- preferably in less than an hour.
Ron Main's Flatfire is poised for 300mph record and Tanis is looking for the
same number. What I can do, to get their story out will be my pleasurably
duty.
I will also start another book on LSR this year, possibly two. More on that
later, after I sign a contract I like.
