In the early 70s, we used to tow my little Corvair- powered mid- engine
sports racer up to the abandoned Picacho aux airfield #1 north of Tucson
(included in Paul Freeman's list) to practice and sort things out on the
car. Some of the asphalt was still in pretty good shape so we had lots of
fun but frequently we were descended upon by law enforcement types. After
satisfying themselves that we OK, they left us to our practice. It seems
that drug runners used those abandoned airstrips sometimes to make their
drops. Near the border this is a part of life, unfortunately.
