This past Wednesday at the Pomona Fairplex @ the NHRA Museum the record
holding Carr - Kaplan Lakester was given a place of honor during the
induction.
The lakester will sit between the Don Garlits dragster, 1st over 200 mph
(1/4 Mile) and the Kenny Bernstein dragster, ( 1st over 300 mph) in the west
hall. The lakester at El Mirage was the 1st over 270, 280, 290 and 300mph
(306 mph) in 1991. It would be 10 years before it would be done again. The
306 run was 15 months before the Bernstein run!
The LSR cars were well represented with the following on display along with
about 300 street rods. The Carr - Kaplan Lakesters was located in the entry
to the museum(Center Stage) To each side were Kennamer- Sager Pinto, Ed
Farrell's Camaro, Thyer-Heathcoat-Hill's Comp. Coupe, Sights-Guthrie street
roadster,Mike Cook JR's. 32 Gas Roadster, Cook- Hodge's Alfa M/Sports,
Kelly- Hall's Belly Tank lakester, Wink Eller's Side Car Motorcycle, Bob
Keyhoe's 30s Dirt Car & Mike & Pam Manghelli's Diesel pick up. Also on
display was the Summers Bros. record holding 4 engine streamliner.
Inside the Museum is a great display of early lakes and Bonneville
memorabilia. Mickey Thompson's Challenger Streamliner and the Assault car,
Barnie Navarro's roadster and other LSR items. This is a must visit when in
Los Angeles.
Overall the LSR cars were a great hit by all and thanks go to Mike Cook for
getting all of the vehicles in such short time for the display. Thanks go to
Wally Parks, Steve Gibbs and the rest of the staff at the Museum for having
the last cruise in of 2001 the Landspeed lakes & Bonneville racers night. It
was great to be part of it.
