Hi folks -
let me clear some confussion about the automatic transmission.
The first automatic transmission which was possible to get, in a normal car on
the market, was 1938 the 6 Cylinder (GM) OLdsmobile.
The improved version was used from 1941 on in the Cadillac.
All other was a so called preselect semi automatic (so it's called in English,
may be you got in America a other name for that).
But this transmission got nothing to do with an automatic transmission.
The base concept for the automatic transmission was done between 1904-1906.
Theoretically - sometimes the practice looks different...and need longer.
In 1930 GM got the most "hardware" problems under control - to get the
production problem - quality, tolerances etc fixed needs another 6 year.
It was implemented than in the new 6 Cylinder Oldsmobile as a second choice for
the customer, instead of the normal manual transmission.
It works not too bad, so good, that three years later it was sold also in the
Cadillac.
Hope it helps to answer the question automatic transmission.
See ya
