Hi Tom,
The stainless fasteners generally available are only rated about 80,00
PSI. A grade 5 bolt is rated at about 120,000 PI and a grade 8 at about
150,000 PI. In structural applications you should not consider anything less
than a grade 5. In critical structural applications you should consider
nothing less than grade 8. A great source of design and fabrication info is
Carroll Smiths "Nuts, Bolts, Fasteners and Plumbing Handbook", it's my
bible.
