Salt Report
Larry and I visited with a number of people in Wendover yesterday, 12-29-00,
on a number of items relative to the salt flats and WOS next year. The salt
flats are flooded well past the end of the road and brine water is flowing
well at a 1.19 sg level which is equivalent to about a 19% to 21% salt
content level. The primary problem for the shut down was a lack of brackish
water supply to the pumps for delivery over to the primary ponds, probably
due to the dry conditions last year. Usually, 3 to 4 of the brackish water
pumps are sufficient to supply water to the primary ponds but it was taking
all 7 pumps to keep the flow up. However, it was still falling behind based
on the brine levels going back on the salt flats. When informed of the
problems by the BLM in early November, we told them to shut down the pumps
until the brine levels were higher than the 1.15 sg and less that they were
running at the time. They took the opportunity to add another primary pond
to the system while they were fixing the brackish water system and pumps to
improve the flow. When I get the daily pumping reports from the BLM, we
will evaluate what the impact was. We will also continue to provide reports
to interested parties at our meetings and through the newletters and
www.saltflats.com.
Larry and I have a very good relationship with the BLM and Reilly now with
good open lines of communications. You can always get a lot more
accomplished working inside with someone rather than staying outside and
throwing rocks at them. If anyone has a question about the status of the
salt laydown project, they can ask me via an email, gary@saltflats.com and
I will give you an up date. Gary Allen
