Some aerodynamic effects reverse at over the speed of sound, for example
below the speed of sound flow will accelerate in a coverging duct whilst at
over the speed of sound you need a diverging duct for acceleration - hence
the converging-diverging nozzles you see on rockets, jets, etc.

You can have some localised reversals in pressure due to shockwaves, etc.,
but good design can minimise these and their effects.

The reason the SSC team didn't test the rocket device was that unless the
nose was already lifting, to test the system would compress the front
springs pretty much to their full extent. Then, when the rockets finished
firing, the springs would extend and the front would bounce into the air -
with no rockets left to push it back down. Not a very good idea!!
