I have encountered the same problem with high mileage wheels and splined
hibs.
You can confirm that the spinner is bottoming out by counting the number of
turns until the spinner thread bottoms out with the wheel on and then with
the wheel off.
With those in my case there was significant wear on the taper of both the
wheel (inner) and the hub.
After checking the thickness of the remaining material both on the wheel
and hub tapers I turned about 0.100" off the outer end of the hubs and all
has been well so far. =F0=9F=A4=9E
