Starters, generators, (and alternators) are not rocket science. I just used
the local automotive starter repair shop. They know how to rewind, grind
stators, and rebearing these things ....they do it all the time and the costs
are quite reasonable. (I think I paid $50 to get a generator rebuilt). Maybe
there is some sort of special "Lucas" magic needed to make the thing
concours.....but I doubt it. Everything the rebuild shop does is inside the
casing and not visible from outside AFAIK.
