"I've recently reinstalled a Lucas wiper motor that was out of the car for a
long time and bench tested OK when connecting the terminals directly to a
battery. Now that the wiper motor is back in the car there is apparently
something wrong inside the motor because now there is a direct short within
the overall electrical system. ....................."
Since the motor has
been out of the car for a long time - is there a chance that the polarity of
the car has been changed in the meantime?
This would give the symptoms you are
getting. The only difference between running the motor off a battery and
installing it in the
car is that the motor's case is connected to one side of
the car's battery. The motor case will be connected to +ve or -ve internally
depending
on whether intended for +ve or -ve earth vehicle.
