A backfire in the header could cause the crankcase fumes to ignite.
PCV valves prevent this (from this site:
http://autorepair.about.com/library/a/1h/bl616h.htm):
"*In case of a backfire in the intake manifold*: the valve closes, stopping the
back flow and preventing ignition of
fumes in the crankcase."
