The wire wheel hubs are supposed to be supported by the conical mating
surfaces.
The fit of the splines should be tight enough that you feel some
suction when you remove the wheel. The
accepted way to check for worn splines is to see if the top edges of
the splines are rounded. If they are, they
are OK. If they are sharp or, worse yet, have a profile sharp and
bent over like a breaking wave, they are worn.
