Not always the coil will work even if it is connected backwards. Look  
at the inside diameter of the battery terminals the smaller terminal  
is the negative side of the battery.

Why are you worried about which way it was. It does not matter to the  
car which way it goes.

Originally the car would have been positive ground. We convert most  
cars over to Negative ground for convience, that way if you have a  
power supply for a cell phone or GPS it isnt a problem
