Jokes aside when it comes to machining equipment, decimal imperial
tolerances are much better to work with than metric tolerances.  That's why
Airbus continued to use inch-thousands for some engineered materials for
quite some time.

Same goes for altitudes, which is more precise per thousand feet than
meters, and probably why they haven't replaced it yet for pilots.
