Others have different experiences, but I have had the shims only with
no spray or goo, just like factory OEM spec - I've had no squeeks for
15 years.
I have had squeeks once or twice in the past when the shim fused to
the back of the pad over time - pulled the pad and seperated the shim
and voila, no squeaks again.
So in my opinion, just don't do it.
