Here is a nice side view of the new 29E engine showing the early (single-layer
of asbestos) heat shield from p.193 of Browning & Needham's 'Healeys and
Austin-Healeys'
And Gary, I would imagine that only a few hundred numbers into the new
triple-carb 29E motor, they were still ironing out running and overheating
problems, rather than improving the 'performance' as such, with their bigger
balance pipe and better heat shield. By the way, the carb return springs were
changed at that same point as well. Even with two asbestos layers the fuel in
the rear bowl could STILL boil on occasion....
