So yesterday I got around to doing my oil change. Who knew that you could
spend 6 hours and still not have a driveable car? In my cleverness back in the
late 70's I was in a parts store to buy an oil filter. They mentioned that
they would not be able to reorder the filter after these were gone and so I
bought all they had. Then I parked the car for 25 or so years. Last oil change
everything was fine. By now, about thirty years later, however, the gaskets in
the box with the filter have gotten a little bit hard, plus they have
shrunken, not much, but just enough. After struggling to get things off and
on around the wires from the rear, I finally got things back together. Started
the engine, kept my eye on the oil pressure gauge and... nothing happened,
needle barely moved. I thought "give it a few seconds more", still nothing.
Shut it down, heard a funny noise as I did. Looked under the car and the
puddle of oil was already 30 inches across. Damn! The filter was not sealed at
the gasket. Took the filter off again (Things are really slippery by now.)
Sure enough there was the cut where the filter housing has cut the gasket. Got
a gasket from another filter, size looked good, put it on. Cranked the engine,
didn't wait long this time. I am getting smarter, I know that sound now of oil
gushing around the gasketby now. Puddle is now 3 feet across. Neighbor comes
over to "help". Says "Hey, Bob, whats this running down the driveway?" Puddle
is now 6 feet long. Tooks things apart again, put the old gasket that was on
the old filter and just as I expected, that didn't work either. Spent the next
4 hours trying to clean up the spill after pushing the car back into the
garage and putting a large tray under the car to catch what is surely going to
continue to drip. BTW, I also left the strainer out of the o/d. Get to redo
that, too.
Questions:
Did I miss some obvious step here?
Is there an o-ring that will fit? If so, what size do I need to look for?
These spin-on adapters (really considering this now), is there one that mounts
the filter in an upright attitude? If so who has it?
