Jokes aside from your "escaping air sound" problem....
I am thinking that sometimes SU fuel pumps when rebuilt will have a
rubber band or tape wrapped around the gap between the cap and the
pump body. If this tape or band is forming a tight seal, you could
have air escaping out of it from the diaphram when it starts its first
upstroke. If this is the case I would ignore it.
Check your pump and see if it has this tape/band on it.
