Jack et al,
I'd like to add two caveats to the sandblasting method (which is the
method I prefer btw).
The media chosen will impact how the metal can be treated afterwards.
If silica sand is used then you cannot powder coat the metal as the
silica is embedded in the metal and causes the failure of the powder
coating material.
Additionally, if there's undercoating/excessive grease/road tar/etc on
the metal you'll have a much faster/more successful process if you
scrape as much as possible off before hand. It's an onerous process,
but a little heat (heat gun/propane torch) and a putty knife will
strip the good relatively quickly.
If you're painting, there's no issues. My recipe for success is
scraping, media blasting, POR-15 & Chassis Coat.
