I have used inline fuel filters on both Healeys for years - usually the
first thing I do when sorting out a newly acquired Healey.  Commonly
accepted practice would indicate that the filter should be on the outlet
side of the pump, but I cheat (since the SU pump is a low pressure device)
and install it between the tank and the pump, on the suction side of the
pump.  The reason - if any debris is going to form in the tank, or if you
get a bad tankful of fuel, at least the pump valves are protected.  I've
never had any problems doing it this way, regardless of the specific pump in
use.

I use a glass filter - Purolator (although the brand could have changed by
now), with replaceable white nylon elements - line size 5/16".  Cut the tank
to pump pipe at a suitable point, slip on the lengths of 5/16" fuel hose
(use the spring clamps that come with the filter), form a suitable loop that
locates the filter exactly where you want it to be for easy inspection and
servicing.  On the 4-seaters, I've got the filters where they can be seen /
reached from either the wheel arch, or with the rear seat pan removed - the
2 seater should be even easier, except for the second battery, if you still
run 2 x 6 volts.  I like to see what might be collecting in the filter (or
not!).  A little ingenuity is appropriate here to be sure that all is safe
and vibration proof for reliability.

As you've seen from the other posts, the little NAPA pump is still available
in the correct pressure rating - going higher than 3 -31/2 lb. invites
flooding with SU's.  It goes without saying that whichever pump you decide
to use, make sure that it is prepared so that you can fit it 'by the side of
the road on a dark and stormy night' - these kinds of things rarely happen
in the garage, right!
