No - Not even VR1.
In my opinion, Valvoline is guilty of half truth advertising if not worse.
They market two "Valvoline Racing" oils.
1- One oil comes in a light grey/silver container, is marked Valvoline
Racing, VR1, SAE 20W-50. On the back is marked "API Services SM, SL,
CD". SM is the controversial service category with low or no ZDDP anti
scuff additive which is purported to cause cat. converter failure. A
couple of years ago this same oil DID contain ZDDP, which was quietly
removed.
2- The other Valvoline Racing oil comes in a dark grey/black
container, is marked "Valvoline Racing, Not street legal, SAE 20W-50
Engine Oil". It states on the back of the container "contains added
zinc & friction modifiers, balanced with reduced detergent levels". It
has no API service designation for obvious reasons.
The whole ZDDP subject just becomes more controversial with deceptive
advertising & half truths leading the way. Even the old reliable
diesel rated oils are removing ZDDP to meet the requirements for cat.
converters on some of the 2007 trucks. The oil formulations,
specifications, & advertising are now changing almost daily.
GM's EOS used to claim a very high ZDDP content in their Engine Oil
Supplement/break in lube. They have since removed references to ZDDP
& recommend EOS only as a first assembly lube, not for long term use.
I suspect that EOS still contains ZDDP & works as well as it always
did to protect new flat tappet cams/lifters from scuffing. They have
just avoided liability for cat. converter damage.
