We are trying to determine why a friend's recently rebuilt BJ8 engine has an
oil leak, apparently thru the timing cover oil seal. One possibility is that
the harmonic damper was worn in the area of the seal, so it was sleeved with
what I believe is called a "speedy" or "jiffy" sleeve. This is a thin wall
(.010") sleeve installed on the damper portion that inserts into the oil seal.
My
question is: What is the +/- tolerances on a shaft that fits into an oil seal
such as the one in the timing cover? I.E. Could the leak be caused by the shaft
being too large for the seal & resulting in some failure? We have not pulled
the engine, yet, so there are other possible causes of the leak. Feel free to
speculate!
