Mick -

If your car is running well at slow speeds, it shouldn't be vapor lock.
Usually with vapor lock, the symptoms dissapear when you step on the gas,
because as fresh cold fuel starts getting pumped through the system faster,
it has less opportunity to vaporize.

It sounds to me either:

1) You have a clogged fuel filter or clog in the fuel line somewhere which
is restricting fuel flow
2) Your fuel pump is not pumping enough fuel (maybe it's old?)
3) Your fuel tank's pick up is clogged with rust or some other type of crud
4) Your mechanical advance on the carburettor is not working correctly
(maybe the contact breaker plate is stuck in place or some of the springs
are broken).

Good Luck!
