Mark:

The problem with bad rotors has been ongoing for a number of years now. So far
we have not been able to track it to a particular manufacturer, as we have
seen a number of different designs of rotors that have failed.

Most failures appear to be due to fine cracks that allow the high tension
spark to short down from the rotor or rotor rivet internally down to the
distributor shaft.

By the time we hear about a problem, we find that our stock has already been
replenished and the rotors are often of a different design.

The popularity of electronic ignitions is probably one of the reasons for the
higher number of failures as most of the shorted rotors are for the 25D or DM2
distributors rather than the later 45D design. We have noted an increase in
cap and rotor failures after installation of electronic ignition components in
these earlier distributors. My bet is that there may be a relationship between
phasing or higher voltages that make arcing more of a problem than with the
traditional point breaker systems. I'm basing this on some experience with
failures in 25D equipped race cars where cap and rotor failures were becoming
enough of an issue that the engine builder went back to points and from that
point on did not have a problem with component failure.

The 45D distributor updates for electronic ignition use such as the redesigned
cap and rotor seem to be much more dependable.

My two bits

Kelvin.

Thanks very much for your feedback on the Lucas and replacement rotors.

The situation is very understandable and expected in the large market area
that Moss deals with.

Thanks for your prompt reply and I did pass that on to the Healey list to
clear that question up.

Can you enlighten me and other Healey listers as to why so many rotors have
been self destructing recently and has this been rectified with certain
distributors? This has been a huge problem on the Healey list, any feedback
of the same from other Brit car lists?

Thanks again, Mark LaPierre
