I also learned a LONG time ago Steve, soak first and the TIGHTEN the fastener
.  Then "foam" on the liquid (GENTLE touch on can button and with tube
applicator).

The "wicking" occurs better with foam than liquid.

After a "soak"  just try a very slight "un-do" and re-soak.
Then do a "do" and re-soak.
Keep on repeating as required-:).
