OD Leaks

I drained the OD to get ready to replace the rear seal. I found three fiber
(may be leather) washers on top of the strainer. I don't see them in the
manuals. Could  this be a mistake from previous work?



Most of the leak appears to be coming from the rear case/brake ring joint.
Can the rear case be moved aft far enough to put sealer on both sides of the
ring without causing the inner mechanism  to come apart?
