bob,
the factory did this for aesthetic reasons. when viewing a Healey from the
rear, your eyes follow the curve of the rear shroud, they don't come to an
abrupt halt with the lower flange blacked out. the same rule applies to the
radiator X braces. how many newly painted cars have you seen where the X brace
is body color and shows prominently through the grille.
