Mark, it's just a method to test the generator without having it to install in
the engine bay. You can confirm with this test your generator is working and
charging the battery after having been installed and when it's driven by the
belt.

Performing this test means reversing the principle of the generator. Generators
and electrically driven motors are not that different. Generators convert
motion into current and electrically driven motors convert current into motion.
Just as loudspeakers and microphones work according to the same principle.
Loudspeakers convert current to sound waves with the help of a diaphragm while
microphones convert sound waves to current with the help of a diaphragm.

The purpose of the generator is to produce current while it is driven via the
pulley and the belt. When you connect the terminals of the generator to a
battery the generator will turn. If it doesn't, it won't charge.

Oh tae, Just never heard of testing a generator this way since its drive
is normaly taken from the driven belt and not actually driven electrically.
Hate to screw it up an have to do it all over again.

What does this actually test? Wire continuity?

Just curious,
Mark

Mark, it's a kind of 'out of the car' test, Ned was doing. You can turn the
generator into a motor and confirm that it will charge when installed.

Ned, are you sure, your generator is polarized?
