Fresh Air Vent

Listors,

I would like to make the fresh-air vent on my BN1 operable.
I have adjusted the valve and lubricated the cable.  What kind of luck have
others had with this system?

There is a large grommet above the clutch pedal that I believe should be
removed.  Are there any other grommets or openings that should be cleared?
Much of the passenger side firewall is covered with rug (by a previous owner),
so other grommets could be hidden.
