Felt plugs for front and rear main bearing caps

I am in the process of assembling my BJ7 engine and having trouble with the  
felt plugs that go on either side of the main bearing caps.  Does anyone  have 
a trick to assembling them?  As an alternate, is there  anything wrong with 
using RTV in place of the felt and simply filling the space  the would be 
occupied by the felt after installing the bearing cap?
