fuel filler cap

I want to strip and rechrome the fuel filler cap on my BN-1.  Have any of you
dealt with this.  There is a spring loaded brass inner piece that seals the
gasket and filler neck.  It is captured in the chrome cap part.  Is there some
way to remove this brass part or is it OK to plate it as an assembly.  It sure
seem to me that it should come apart first.
