I have no photo on hand but I done what you intend to do, use the aluminum  
gear knob with the switch inside on a side shifter; First,I had to bent a 
little  the shifter to have the knob more "vertical", I have the switch on the 
driver  side, it's easy to use it with the thumb, and for the wire, I have used 
a 
black  shrink tube which hold the wires along the shifter and look not to bad. 
I never  found the heat as a problem.
