Hi John,
I don't think that you are supposed to slide the seal in. Starting at
one end, wedge both edges in with the dull putty knife. Work across to
the other side. Use a little soap on the rubber to ease things a bit.
If it were loose enough to slide in, it wouldn't seal very well anyway.
